Who Are We

Welcome To OREA

This Optometric Research & Education for Africa symposium was initiated by an academic team from within the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Optometry Department. Over many years, the department has engaged in numerous programmes and activities to develop a high quality, socially accountable education and research programme. The rationale has been, primarily, to ensure that the graduates produced exit with the knowledge, attributes and skills that empower them to be change agents towards improving the lives of the communities that they serve. This journey involved reviewing the curriculum and attempting to align it to the needs of the country. It revealed the dire lack of national, regional and local research to inform our curriculum and education processes. Additionally, it identified the lack of capacity in research and curriculum development amongst academics as a key barrier to a transformative education agenda. Engagement with colleagues from other sub Saharan African programmes highlighted that this problem is not unique to UKZN and that there is a need for a regional initiative to address the challenges facing optometry education towards delivering relevant, high quality, research-led academic programmes. It was to this end that this symposium focused on Transforming Optometric Education through Research Development was held.
